Writer’s Seminar

Mo Hayder is a British author of crime and thriller fiction. She is the queen of fear. She goes to very dark places.

Her novels are one of the most thrilling ones. Her novel Birdman has been rated as one of the top thriller crime novels by The Guardian. Her writing is based on personal encounters with criminals, prostitutes and the police. She looks like such a nice lady, but in her début novel Birdman she launches herself right into the heinous world of Val McDermid who is a Scottish best selling novelist. She was awarded The Edgar Allen Award in 2012 for her novel Gone. Her Jack Caffery has been more famous than her standalone novels.

I chose Mo Hayder, because I love how she describes the gruesome details. Reading her stories a part of me knew what would happen, but the twists and turns always made me nauseous in a good way. I mean I could always hope for an unexpected end. Her stories are in excellent prose and she never drags them. Jack Caffrey is an interesting character just like the criminals in the novels. She writes gripping, tense, shocking and a disturbing story which hits her readers right in the gut. What I like the most of her novels is that she lets her readers decided what they want to feel rather than making them feel, she doesn’t treat her readers like puppets. This lets her readers feel free, and more into the story.

My favourite novel by Mo Hayder is Birdman. It is quite an unsettling story. A very well constructed storyline with many twists. Her characters have a dark, foreboding world of their own. It resonates with raw intensity, it’s sadistic and graphic details can grip anyone. The scenes are so intense and realistic, it is not for weak stomachs. It appears harmless at first but then when it starts going berserk, and you can’t even back off because you’re in too deep. Another bit of this novel I loved was the Forensic details, since I’m looking into a career in Forensic Sciences, it was quite a compelling ride.
